Frozen Falls

Bridal Veil Falls

It was such a pretty day on Saturday (where did that weather go? bring it back), that we just had to take a small trip up to Bridal Veil Falls. I also took my HOLGA, and am looking forward to getting the film from it developed.

Provo River

And I thought that the sun setting over the river was also gorgeous. Even though the weather was nice and sunny, it was still a bit chilly (especially with the sun going down), that we didn’t stay for long. Hopefully it will stop snowing soon and we will be able to make it back up there again to take more photos.

Garden: Planting Onions

By Aimee, March 30, 2009 9:17 am

We had nice weather on Saturday, so I took advantage of it by planting my onions! Onions are best planted in the cooler weather, late March and early April. They actually need to get in the ground when it is still cool, but when the ground is workable. Our weather forecast showed snow for the coming week, and while onions might enjoy the cold, I certainly don’t enjoy trying to garden in it!

I planted my onions from transplants, and divided them between one of our EarthBox planters and the planting box that was here when we moved in. Other than a few onions, and our lumina pumpkins, our food will all be grown in containers; three Earthboxes, one self watering pot, and the upside down tomato planter. You may remember our first Earthbox from the video I made about our peppers, which yielded us more peppers than we could use at that time (this year I plan to make more videos, so stay tuned).  It will be really interesting to see how our onions do in the Earthbox!

Before onions can make bulbs, energy has to be stored in the top green leaves. So, when the day length and the temperature the plants will stop making new leaves and start using the energy stored to make bulbs. It’s very important to get them in early, so they have time to grow tops and store energy. The more energy stored, the bigger the bulb.

If you are planting onions from transplants like we did, be sure to put them in the soil around 1 inch deep, and if you have space, 4 inches apart. Giving them plenty of space will allow for larger onion bulbs.

29 Day Giving Challenge

I joined the 29 Day Giving Challenge. Yes indeed, I am going to give it another go! If you aren’t familiar with the challenge, it’s pretty simple. Try to give something to someone each day (can be money, time, service, etc). It’s mainly about making a conscious effort to do something nice for someone else.

One thing that I am not sure about is if I will blog about it… maybe I will, but I’m not sure how to approach it without sounding like tooting my own horn. Also, sometimes the best gifts are done secretly, and blogs aren’t great places to keep secrets. ;)

However, I did start it off with a bang by making a donation to the ASPCA. I made it in our sweet Yoshi’s name, and am happy to know that the money is going to help so many animals find happy homes and get out of seriously bad situations. If you haven’t watched Animal Cops on Animal Planet (very hard show to watch honestly, but it does show the amazing work that the ASPCA does), you should do so.  Also, April is Go Orange for Animals month, which we created a Flickr group for, and as you can see in the photo, is something Baby celebrates by wearing her ASPCA bandana:

At any rate, I would love to invite everyone to try the 29 Day Giving Challenge. Let’s look outside of ourselves a bit more, and focus on what we can do to help people around us. Giving feels good too, so really, it’s just giving a gift to yourself!

It’s Official

By Aimee, March 26, 2009 3:08 pm

Over the past month I had been seriously considering going back to school for a new degree, but could not figure out what I would study. In my heart I am a dancer, a gardener, a photographer, and maybe a cook. I already have a degree in graphic design and a lot of the other degree options seemed dreadfully dull. Then it dawned on me, one of those “DUH” moments. What had I been doing for the past few years as a blogger? Writing!

care2logo It was then and there that I declared myself a writer. Now it is even more official, I am freelancing for Care2 in their causes section. Other amazing opportunities are in the works as well, which I promise to let you know about once they become official. For now though, I would love to have you come over and see my first article (I am the one who took the photograph for the post as well, which you may recognize). I will be adding a feed on the sidebar so you can easily follow my posts on Care2. I would love to have you comment there (it’s always nice to know things are being read).

What about you? Are you doing what you enjoy? If not, maybe it’s time to declare that you are, and then take steps to make it so. :)

Thankful Thursday 3/26/09

Here is my list of the 5 things I am thankful for this week:

  • Internet. I kind of take it for granted, but the internet has opened a lot of doors, allowed me to reconnect with old friends, and also make new ones.
  • Tea Parties (as in the Boston kind). It’s good to see that people are becoming more aware, and more passionate, about the direction our country is going. I may not agree with each protest, but it seems good that people care.
  • Books. I have a bunch of new books to read and review. Yipeeee!
  • Snow. Even though I don’t like being cold, and am so very ready for spring, snow is a good thing because we need the water so very much in our desert oasis.
  • Feeling well. I savor each and every moment of feeling well when it happens. Health is precious.

What about you? What are you thankful for this week, day, hour? Please play along on your own blog, or in the comments!
