Who Killed the Electric Car?

We recently watched the documentary called Who Killed the Electric Car?. It was made in 2006, but is so relevant to what is going on today that it could have been made yesterday. Why is it so relevant? For one thing, it shows how GM makes poor choices. They came up with an amazing electric car, it looked great, was sporty, and people fell in love with it. Then they killed it.

But in killing the EV1, they also killed all the other great electric cars that had come out in the same time period from other car companies. By now you are probably scratching your head, thinking about how you never heard of the car before! I hadn’t heard of it either. It was for sale in California and was part of their Clean Air Act that was going to require car companies to have a percentage of zero emission cars for sale (or they wouldn’t be able to sell in the state at all). But that’s not the only reason why it never gained a lot of notice, GM just didn’t advertise it well, despite spending millions on ads.

I don’t want to give away the whole story, because it is a documentary worth watching! It will certainly have you wondering why they did what they did, and why electric cars aren’t being touted as the car of the future. Think about it, electric power can come from more than just coal… we can build solar arrays and wind farms (plus a lot of new ideas that people have)  to make electric power to power our cities, homes, and cars if the demand is there.

So, go find this movie at your library or video store… if you like documentaries, I think you will enjoy it.
