In Season: Apples

By Aimee, October 3, 2009 12:48 am

Apples are finally in season! This is my favorite time of year for apples because they are so fresh, tasty, and crisp. We recently got some fresh apples from a friends’ tree, and of course that meant it was time to try a new recipe.

Baked apples

The baked apples in the recipe turned out great! It comes from the book Betty Crocker’s Healthy New Choices: A Fresh Approach to Eating Well, which has a lot of great recipes using healthier ingredients. The recipe was very easy, though I do wish that I had an apple corer that only did the core. The hardest part was trying to core the apple with a knife. I used a sugar free maple syrup too, which worked out well.

Here are some recipes from around the web that I thought sounded good. I will have to try some of them soon!

  • Apple waffles from my friend Rachel of Coconut & Lime fame. Not only do they sound delicious, I love the heart waffle iron she used. I wonder if they would work well in my Hello Kitty waffle iron?
  • I haven’t had apple dumplings before, but this recipe on All Recipes for Country Apple Dumplings sure sounds like a fall treat.
  • My friend Amy posted these Apple Pecan Muffins that had me drooling.
  • Just yesterday this Apple Muffin with Streusle topping showed up on Two Frog Home. They look really good, who doesn’t love streusle topping?
  • Dutch oven apple cobbler using Apple Beer, and many other fun recipes using Apple Beer.
  • And of course, for the traditional apple people, what could be better than apple pie? This version has no sugar.

What is your favorite way to use apples when they are in season?
