Crochet fail.
I first learned to crochet when I was very young, around age 4. My grandma and her friend were both talented crocheters, and we are lucky to have some of the blankets that she made. They taught me how to do a very simple, double crochet. I remember making a long, long chain and saying that I had made a worm.
I didn’t do much crochet after that, but in my junior high arts and crafts class we did macrame. So, I had a worm, and a plant holder to my credit, and moved onto sewing.
Fast forward a lot of years and I tried once again to crochet, but this time I wanted to make a throw. I had found this incredibly soft yarn, and had to try it out. There is a throw in existence, and it is warm and very soft, but it has a major flaw. It’s totally wonky and uneven. It does it’s job, but looks funny doing it. I recently found some more fun yarn, yarn that even gives a donation to Komen, so I thought I would make a scarf. Surely I could manage a scarf?!
Oh ye of little faith. I did once again, fail! I started off pretty well, but the yarn is very hard to work with. It was super hard to see the stitches. It’s very soft yarn, and also kind of thin in the middle. I started over twice, then gave up and decided that I had better figure out what I was doing wrong before I try this kind of yarn again.
And so, I pulled out an old yarn I had that I thought would be easier to work with. Things were going pretty well, and then that old familiar problem popped up. My edges! I can’t seem to keep them the same size going all the way. So my “scarf” looks a bit like an hourglass, with thicker parts and thinner parts.
Am I doomed to bad crochet? Will I ever figure it out? Is there a crochet hero to save me?
Did you think to try a loom? I’ve watched friends have great luck with them.
I haven’t tried one, but have wanted to do so. I think they look like a lot of fun. I have a feeling they would be easier too.
May have to take a trip to the craft store (dang it!).
I’ve tried to make a hat. And except for the fact I used the wrong yarn (I tried it with Baby Yarn) it was really easy. The scarf looked even easier. Good luck!

Oh, I feel your pain! Knitting with that stuff is actually easier.
I’ve found this site http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/learn-to-knit VERY helpful with knitting, especially because I do Continental and not English, and this site http://www.nexstitch.com/v_double_crochet.html looks like it’s very helpful for crochet. The video is embedded in the knitting one, and must be downloaded in the crochet one, but it’s so helpful to see how it in action!

I find that I have similar problems with crochet. I know that if I work at it for a while I seem to get better with each scarf. I think it has to do with pulling the chains tighter or making them more loose. After a while it is easy to make them consistently the same tightness. Good luck.
I have no patience whatsoever so I think crocheting will never be for me.
