The Red Hat Society
The other day while grocery shopping, my mom and I saw two adorable ladies wearing red hats and purple. They were obviously part of a red hat club, which is awesome. My mom thought that it would be fun to join one, and I hope that she will do just that (she needs a bit of fun in her life, and what is more fun than girlfriends?).
Don’t you love the cake in the photo, click it to see more amazing cakes. Do you know the poem that red hats and purple came from? If you haven’t heard it in awhile, or ever, here it is:
Warning by Jenny Joseph
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes
that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
Did you know there is an actual Red Hat Society? They even have a website so you can find your local club. There must be one nearby, or at the very least, a society of two! The ladies we saw looked dressed to the nines, either coming from an event or on their way to something fun. Either way it was cute to see.
I have always loved the poem though. It makes me wonder why we don’t go ahead and do the things we want to do now! Why wait until some other day in the future. That is why the last part is the best… about practicing now so people won’t be shocked.

I do quite like that poem. I think it’s important for us to all remember we can be whoever we want – we don’t need to watch others and wish we had their confidence, style, knowledge – we can have all of that ourselves.
