Of snow and space.
It’s still snowy out, and despite the sunshine, still quiet cold.
Space (and the ups and downs of the weather), have always been an obstacle in my hoop practice. I really should live in Hawaii, where the weather is gorgeous year round and hooping outdoors would be a daily treat. I however, live in a gorgeous mountain filled area where we get to enjoy all four seasons, with snow and cold during the winter months.
I tend to hoop inside when it’s cold out, though when it’s above freezing I do venture out into the backyard. My home isn’t laid out in the most hoop friendly of ways, so I often worry about breaking stuff. Our ceilings are a bit low, but luckily I am a bit short, so I can usually get the hoop up above my head and around without breaking the light fixture.
I have space for all the tricks that I know right now, but I am going to have to practice outside to learn so many of the tricks I hope to learn this year.
Sometimes I imagine emptying the living room where I hoop. Can you imagine? Nothing there at all, just space for hooping and dancing! I think it would confuse people who came to visit. They would walk into our home expecting a place to sit and chat, and instead find a completely empty room. Maybe they would think we were too poor to buy furniture, but then they would notice all the other rooms in our home fully furnished. It would be a lot of fun, we would probably even need to set up a hidden camera to catch their confusion on video.
What about you, fellow hoopers? Do you have a special hoop space? If so, I am indeed jealous.

I wish I could dedicate a room entirely to hooping, but as it goes I practice isolations in the hall (which ensures my planes are good!) and have limited hoop space in the living room. I can choose lower body hooping by standing on the low Japanese dining table, or overhead hooping by tilting the table on its edge and standing on the floor. Sometimes I bounce on the bed and waist hoop – but only if my husband needs to be awakened urgently.
I also practice in my building's carport which keeps me dry in the rain, but not warm. Tokyo doesn't get snow or frigidly cold so on sunny afternoons it is possible to hoop outdoors even in January.
