Yep, still working on it!

By , January 13, 2010

I am still working on the trick.

It’s getting better, I am able to more easily get it up past the girls. Sadly, it still won’t stay there long enough to do one full revolution.

I’m trying to remember that different things are hard for different people, and other things are easy. We each have our own way of learning. The key is to keep trying. And I am going to keep trying! :)

We have a date!

By , January 13, 2010

Somehow in writing that it feel more like I am announcing a wedding or something other than our new counter tops. LOL! However, we finally know the date when our kitchen will be transformed for the better. In just one week (Jan 21), we will have our counter top installed. Granted, there is a lot that we need to do in preparation, and there will be some things we will need to do after (back splash), but it’s happening! Even the old counter is getting in on the demo action, it’s started to demo itself!

Ready to go!

I really can’t tell you how excited I am. Plus, demolition is a hoot and a half! Right now I am just trying to decide how to best dispose of the gigantic mess we are going to make. One idea I had was to order a dumpster and then let our neighbors use it too since January is a great clutter clearing month, but apparently you have to pay quiet a bit for that. I guess we will be filling our regular trash can to the brim!

My crystal ball sees many take out dinners in the recent future.

Winter Projects

By , January 12, 2010

Winter isn’t my favorite time of year. Not by a long shot! I need the sun to feel completely happy, and the cold, well, it may feel nice sometimes, but it gets old fast. The good thing about it is that it forces me indoors, which in turn gives me the chance to take on indoor projects. Isn’t that how it always goes, our thoughts turn to our homes in January?

Luckily, we have a MAJOR project in the works. Here is the “before” photo:

Our kitchen

I cannot tell you how excited I am about it, but let’s just say, every time I go in my kitchen now I do a happy dance. Why? We are replacing our tile counter tops! The major reason why I never wanted to get tile in the first place is that it is so hard to keep clean. I seriously cannot wait for a nice, smooth, easy to clean surface! We are so grateful because we are getting new, Wilsonart HD tops, complete with an under-mounted sink! I say grateful because it is coming to us in exchange for our documentation on our blog, The Stylish Nest. Oh, and I will be posting bits here as well of course!

In addition to our major project, I have two other projects on my mind, the basement and the laundry room. And as for the basement, major clutter clear out and then some major fun! We want to create a better work out space, and I would really love to get our air hockey table cleared off (and the area around it) so it is actually playable. What is it with smooth surfaces? They are like clutter magnets!

Oh that pesky laundry room!

The laundry room is currently someplace between a guest room and junk room. It used to be a craft/art area, but when we replaced our mattress the old one ended up in the laundry room. The idea of having a guest room (for whom I don’t know, since we don’t have guests) was always a nice idea floating around my mind. I loved the idea of having two bedrooms to decorate. However, in the real world where space is precious, the guest room is a bit redonk. Like I said, we really don’t have guests. If we ever did, I would feel horrible putting them in that room anyway… it’s the COLDEST room in the house, and the mattress should really just be in the landfill it’s so broken.

My two ideas for the room: 1. Get it back into mad scientist mode. 2. Make a big closet. Should be fun to see what really happens. Maybe we’ll just end up hibernating instead.

Do you have big projects in store this winter?

Kitchen makeover: getting closer

By , January 11, 2010

The kitchen is about to have a makeover that will make a world of difference in our lives. We are getting new Wilsonart HD counter tops to replace the tile! Not only will it make things easier to keep clean (tile is horrible, especially the small tiles we have), it will also change how the kitchen looks. We think it’s going to be amazing, and the best part of the makeover is that it is a big budget look on a small budget price tag! The sink is even going to be undermounted, which is something we never knew you could do with laminate!

To refresh your memory, here is the kitchen counter top in the “before” state:

Tomorrow we will find out our install date, and then the fun part (demolition) will begin. We will be making some other small changes to the kitchen while we have everything ripped apart; new back splash, possible under-cabinet lighting and plugs, and of course some serious reorganization in the lower cabinets. Of course, we will share all the mayhem and excitement here with you as well, so stay tuned!
