Next up, flooring!

By , April 24, 2010

We are looking into options to replace our current carpet with something new. In fact, we are both so frustrated at the carpet we have now that my husband wants to just take it out and lay down some rugs. What is wrong with our current carpet? It’s cheap, it was here when we bought the house and we were so excited at the time because it was new and looked great. However, it falls apart with each vacuum, and generally looks old and matted. There are even areas where it has bubbled up and needs to be re-stretched.

Right now we have looked at bamboo, laminate “wood”, linoleum, and even cork. Our dream floor would have large planks with the hand carved look, in a darker stain. Turns out our dream floor is quiet pricey though! We want something that won’t break the budget, will look nice, and of course, feel good to walk on as well. Carpet isn’t out of the question either of course, if it’s high quality and will hold up well.

What kind of flooring do you have? Have any of you used cork flooring? We’d love to hear your input!

We currently have hand scraped wood flooring in our home. We had a contractor install it from eContractorBids.com. They did an amazing job installing it and it looks gorgeous. But like you said, that type of wood flooring is very expensive.

We put down engineered hardwood from Lumber Liquidators in a color called Merlot Oak ($1.99sf). It’s dark with a nice reddish tint. I love it….but I will never put down dark hardwood again. I vacuum it every single day. In my next home, I want bamboo flooring in a nice light color. My husband really likes cork flooring, and if we hadn’t found such a good deal on the Merlot Oak, we would have cork. Good luck with your search!

We (actually my hubby did the hard work) just put down 1200 sf of engineered hand scraped, wide planked wood from simple floors. We floated them over existing concrete slab and the price was really good. I believe it was 2.34/sf on sale but with us doing the labor the price was right!! The floors have completely transformed our house!

Thanks for all the input! We are still doing research, but we do know that we will do the install ourselves. It just saves so much money. :)
