Compost, a gardener's best friend.
If you are a gardener then you already know that compost can make a huge difference in the health of you plants. We have always wanted to use compost, but honestly, didn’t want to build a traditional compost pile in our yard. It would take up precious space, and of course, wouldn’t look very pretty either. I even looked into making a worm farm, which could be kept in our basement. It was intriguing to say the least, but also sounded like tricky business.
Luckily, we got the chance to check out a composter that is made for your home! If you want to make compost easily, then the NatureMill is going to be your new best friend. The composter can be set up in your kitchen (or anywhere else with a plug), to make quick use of your table scraps.
This is an amazing composter because you can add food to the mix at any time, up to 120 lbs a month! There is no mixing, the machine does all the work. We love that there are no trash odors, and the variety of items we can put inside. The NatureMill provides a continuous air flow and a powerful carbon filter to remove odors, and the compost tumbler is completely sealed!
You can have fresh compost every 2 weeks, and there is even a red light to let you know when it’s time to empty the bin. Unlike traditional composting methods, you can add meat, dairy, and fish. You can even compost pet waste, kitty litter, and cage beddings. This is because the NatureMill has high temperatures inside.
The instructions were clear, and the product comes assembled, so all you have to do is make the composting mix. Everything you need is included except for one cup of dirt (which you can get out of your garden, even if the dirt is frozen).
We eat a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, so it has been wonderful to be able to easily convert the waste into compost. We keep our NatureMill in the kitchen area, which makes it easy to add our left over food. We would really love to get the cabinet kit (shown in the photo), if only we had a free cabinet.
The composter does have to be plugged in, and it works best when you break up your food waste into small bits. I am most excited to use the compost because it will be such a great way to start off our plantings, and to feed our garden, without having to spend money on commercial compost!
You can buy online direct from the company via the NatureMill website, and you can also check their site for local stores. Thank you NatureMill for providing the product for our review, and especially for giving us an easy way to feed our garden this season!
Dreaming of spring, and a backyard habitat.
I have a bit of an obsession with the idea of creating a backyard habitat. It’s an idea that caught my attention thanks to a show (which I believe aired on HGTV) a few years ago. It’s simple idea, but one that does take some planning and thought.
Since we moved into an already built home, with a well established yard full of grass, we have been slowly making it over. In the front yard we removed tons of grass to make space for flower beds. The backyard has seen a few minor changes, but for the most part has remained untouched. We hope to change that this spring, and I am hoping that I can use some of the ideas and create a backyard habitat!
The basics of a backyard habitat include food sources, water, and hiding places. I think it would be really fun to build an area where we had a pond, with a waterfall, surrounded by a rock garden (hiding spots included). Then we will also add more native plants in other areas of the yard as well (food sources). Of course this may all be a huge dream, as it is a large project, which would likely require a large budget, but it sure is fun to start planning!
