Whippy Pies

By , November 29, 2010

Lately I have been seeing “Whoopie Pies” all over the web. They look delicious, but honestly I have never tried to make one. I even found this adorable cookbook, Whoopie Pies, that I put on my Christmas wishlist. Even though I never made one, they kept coming to my mind over and over again. Enter the Cool Whip, and my own little creation, the “Whippy Pie”!

Whippy Pie Makings

Easy, easy! We already had some great chocolate chip cookies made up, and of course, a nice big tub of Cool Whip left over from the Thanksgiving holiday. Two cookies, some whip for the inside, and there you have it! A “Whippy Pie”! And it was very tasty! And probably a lot less calories as well!!

Always fun to use what is already in the kitchen to make something new and tasty! What about you, have you made Whoppie Pies?

Five day weekend!

By , November 26, 2010

You read that right, a 5 day weekend is being had as I type! My husband has a good job (one of many things we are thankful for this year), and they give everyone the day after Thanksgiving off. Being the smart cookie that he is, he takes the day before Thanksgiving off too, thus affording himself a luxurious 5 day weekend!

Begging at the table.

Baby especially loves the holidays when she gets very spoiled. Yes, she gets to indulge in some “people food” on holidays. Her favorites this year? Rolls (of course), green beans with melted Velveeta cheese, and turkey. As you can see, she is particularly good at the “I’m here looking cute, so give me what I want” routine. And really, who could resist those little eyes?

Ice!

It has also been very, very, very, cold here! Today I noticed some fun ice formations in the garden, including the above which to me look like ice grapes. Hot chocolate will be flowing freely around here for the next few months.

We didn’t participate in Black Friday at all. I do love the idea of supporting Small Business Saturday though! But then, I always love to support the underdogs! What about you? Did you get into the Black Friday madness? Or did you sleep in and enjoy the day off?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope that you are enjoying time with your loved ones. Our holidays have changed a bit since I got married. Time has to be split 3 ways to be celebrated with my parents, and my husband’s Mom and Step-dad, and his Dad and Step-Mom. We have 3 different Thanksgiving dinners, spread out over a few days. We aren’t the Gilmore Girls after all (trying to fit in 4 dinners in one day)!

Growing up Thanksgiving took place at our house, with grandparents coming to dinner, and my aunt and uncle from Seattle usually came too. My aunt Nancy is quiet a good cook, and most of the excitement came while the cooking was going on. We always had traditional pumpkin pie, and then an additional new pie to try out. One year we even made Australian pavlova! I always made the mashed potatoes. For as long I can remember, I made the potatoes. Peeled them, mashed them, and made sure they were lump free.

Then one year my aunt and uncle brought a puzzle and a new tradition was born. The Thanksgiving puzzle is always so much fun, and this year we made a new twist on the tradition by building Hogwarts. Lego Hogwarts that is!

Lego Harry Potter

I’m sure that if my hubby had the day off the next morning, we would have stayed and worked on it all night, which seems to always be the case when a puzzle is out. As it was, we (my hubby and I) were able to get about half of the castle done, and we were all so impressed at how detailed it was! There is even Sirius Black in the fireplace! If you love Harry Potter, you really should get the Hogwarts Castle Lego set, it’s a gem!

Lego Harry Potter Owls

Now that I am all grown up and married, I still make the mashed potatoes, but I also make the pumpkin pie, and the yams for my family holiday dinner. For dinner with my husband’s family I never seem to make the same thing twice, so sometimes I get to try out new recipes, while today I made rolls.

Since I don’t really like turkey, for me Thanksgiving is all about the rolls!! And the desserts! What about you? What is your favorite food at Thanksgiving?

Have a safe, and thankful holiday!
