Pardon my lungs.

Oh, Winter! You and I really don’t play well together, do we?

Winter is my enemy. Oh sure, it can be downright pretty at times, with the snow and the Christmas lights, but the cold, dry, air, makes my body fall apart. Each year around this time, I get the dreaded cough. I cough, cough, and cough, and find it hard to stop. Each and every winter. It hurts, it’s exhausting, it makes me a bit grumpy, it also sounds like I am dying and probably makes those around me very uncomfortable. I always try to tell people that I am not contagious, that it’s just my lungs trying to breath.

Snow!

So, I have to admit that it’s hard to work out in any real capacity during this time of the year. The lack of breath, and just being worn out from not sleeping and trying to breath makes it a tad tough. Which is really a bummer because I enjoy moving my body. My clothes appreciate it too, when they get to fit properly.

This past month and a half I have gained 6 pounds! I console myself in knowing that there were a lot (and I do mean a lot) of holiday treats in the mix from November until now. But I am still not happy with the gain because what it really represents is a loss of health and wellness. Summer cannot come fast enough. And I really need to reintroduce myself to our treadmill.

What about you dear friends, do any of you struggle with health issues that make it harder to keep in shape?

P.S. Did you get an orange in the bottom of your Christmas stocking too? If you are wondering what to do with it (other than just eating it), come visit my latest gardening article: Grow your own citrus.

  1. I really struggle with winter, too! I get nasty dust allergies and dry patches on my hands and the gloomy, shorter days affect my mood, too. Not to mention I can never seem to get used to the cold. So I hear you.

That sucks that you can’t even exercise! That would be miserable. Do you think a humidifier would help? You could run one in your bedroom while you sleep and also while you walk on the treadmill.

    • I hear you! I really hate the gloomy parts of it too. I get such dry skin this time of year also.

We have a humidifier (a Hello Kitty one) in the bedroom that I use to sleep, and a larger one that I run in the living room. It does help a lot. Sorry to hear that you have bad allergies in the winter too.
