Fun film.

By , January 31, 2011

When I was in High School I took a class in which we produced a weekly TV show. We learned to film, edit, and the like. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of hard work. Today editing is so much easier, with computer programs that make it pretty simple (though there is still a lot involved). It’s hard to imagine back to the time when they actually edited by cutting the film and putting it back together, and yet that is exactly what they did.

One of my favorite movies ever is Topper. It was made in 1937, with a sequel to follow in 1941. The original is the one that I love, it’s a funny ghost story, and it has some ground breaking special effects for the time period! While at Alt, DJ Spooky showed this fun clip from even earlier in time! It’s called one man band:

Isn’t it cute? But more than that, isn’t it amazing? Imagine the work that he did to do that in 1900. It’s not like today when we can easily make copies of ourselves on the computer (though a good modern example is Outkast’s music video for Hey Yeah).

What is your favorite old movie? What is it that makes you love it?

Of barefeet and snow.

Sparkle skirt

In the summer my feet rarely see the inside of a shoe. In fact, even in the winter, the shoes come off the second I get inside the house. I love being barefoot, and winter, with all of it’s socks and shoes, drives me nuts. Anything that I can be doing barefoot, I am doing barefoot.

African dancing is done barefoot. So is bellydance. I hoopdance sans shoes as well. So, it should come as no surprise that I am really interested in the barefoot running movement that is taking place. Sadly, I am coming into it right in the middle of winter, when the sidewalks are covered with snow, ice, or gunk (dirt and salt for example). I had heard of it before, but of course reading Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, inspired me even more. Yes, I could buy some expensive non-shoe shoes to give it a try in, but I want to actually be barefoot! :)

I’ve been reading about how to start out with barefoot running. I admit that they make it sound a little hard. Run down to your corner and back, and that’s about it for the first time. That’s really it for the first time? But I do understand that most people’s feet spend their day being coddled by shoes, and aren’t really ready for running. I wonder about my feet, are they ready to run, or will I have to start out super slow too? And in the winter, can I start on a treadmill? I could go outside if it were above freezing I suppose, but that’s rare in the early morning right now.

Zen Habits has a great little article about barefoot running. As does Wired. In fact, there are a lot of great sites about the topic, including one that a friend from Junior High/High School started writing called Barefoot Lesher (I wish he would update it more often). And I know that many other blog friends run barefoot too (Spabettie for example, though she doesn’t post much on the topic).

What about you? Have you tried running barefoot recently? Remember the days when we used to run through the grass barefoot all the time? I look forward to recapturing those feelings and that kind of moment.

Can I play yet?

Can I play yet?

Baby had her 3 week post-op check this week. She had been wearing an inflatable collar to keep her from her incision. The vet said that it was all healed up, she was free to not wear a collar, and she can even have a bath! In fact, he was very pleased at how she healed and everything looks great. She can even start going for walks when it’s not so dirty and snowy out.

Check out that skinny little naked leg!

What is really adorable is that she wants to run and play, but she knows that she isn’t supposed to. She’ll start to, then stop, then start, then stop. It’s so cute, but a little sad too because she obviously feels better and wants to be normal again. Just 5 more weeks Baby! :)

Bacon ketchup.

I had a little time to kill between events at Alt. Since I was staying at home and driving up and back, I decided to make the most of the time in SLC and go to The Gateway. After a quick visit to the planetarium, I visited Anthropology and fell in love with these cute giraffe stacked pots. I really wanted to buy them, but refrained due to the cost. Then I went to a new store that sold all kinds of hot spicy goodness. Oh, and bacon ketchup.

While I didn’t buy any of that, I did pick up some habanero salsa and habanero popcorn. We always grow our own habaneros to make our special, super hot salsa, but obviously with all the snow and cold, we don’t have any right now. Habaneros are Heath’s favorite. They are a little spicy for me, but I do love the salsa in re-fried beans. For Christmas my hubby got a ghost pepper kit in his stocking. We are waiting for it to warm up a bit before we plant it, but I am really excited to see what it’s like. Can he handle the heat?!

What about you? Do you like the heat? What’s your favorite hot/spicy dish?
