Heart of Haiti is a product line sold by Macy’s, but created by Haitian artisans. The products are all made by hand, from some of the most unlikely materials! Talk about using what you have! Recycled oil drums become trays, candle holders, and napkin rings. The artists use what they have on hand, from stone, to wood, and even paper mache.
The artists get a share from each sale of the items, which helps them rebuild their lives, and their communities. We all watched the tragic events of last year’s earthquake in Haiti, and know that the devastation went beyond the loss of material possessions. However, with everything gone, including raw materials, it has become very hard for people to start making a living again. Many master artists who had planned to leave Haiti, are now staying so they can train the next generation of artists. Programs like this help encourage that.
I really love the variety of items, and I also was impressed at the prices! One of my favorite items, the Heart of Haiti Tray, was only $40! I have seen trays similar in size go for much more than that, and without as much design too! I also really loved the napkin rings, and the bowls. I think that the watermelon bowls would be so fun for an afternoon BBQ in the summer, it’s hard to imagine they are made of paper!
With the anniversary of the earthquake coming up (Jan 12), it’s good to see that there are still ways to help. If you have been looking for something fun and unique to add to your home decor, please be sure to check out the offerings at Heart of Haiti.
I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.
My Christmas tree is still up.
There is also still a Santa flamingo in the yard.
Baby had to stay overnight at the vet’s after her surgery, and we were able to bring her home on Wed morning. She has been very tired, and it’s pretty obvious that she is sore. She is eating and drinking, and even enjoyed a few good licks on her favorite toy. In a week we take her back to the vet for a check up and to get the soft cast removed. Hopefully she will start putting weight on the leg soon, as walking on it is her physical therapy. For now though, we are just glad she is home. Hobbled yes, but home.
