Surgery for Baby

Baby had surgery this morning for a luxating patella. For those not in the know, it’s a fairly common problem in small dogs in which the patella comes out of the groove it rests in, making it difficult to walk. There are different stages, sometimes the patella goes back in the groove by itself, other times it can be manipulated back in by a vet, and in the last stages it requires surgery.

Baby needed surgery. The vet called us after surgery and said that she was doing well, surgery went great, but there was a BIG surprise when he was in fixing the patella. Baby didn’t have a groove! He was shocked that she has done so well for the past 7 years because there was no groove for the patella to rest in at all! Normally in the surgery they deepen the groove and add artificial ligaments to help the patella stay in place. He had to create a groove first, not just deepen one! Amazing!

Our sweet little Baby sure has been through a lot, with many other problems, so we really hope that we can find her some relief through this surgery. It will be an 8 week recovery where we are supposed to keep her from running and jumping (luckily she doesn’t jump much due to her back, but she sure loves to run). Needless to say, we are all looking forward to bringing her home tomorrow (they keep her overnight), and getting her on the mend.
