Confession #45

By , February 8, 2011

When the commercials for the Hoodie-Footie first came out, I really got the giggles.

The name was funny. They were saying that it was something “sexy” to wear, and as most TV commercials are, the whole scene was just pretty funny to me. However, the more I see them, the more I think that they would be super comfy to wear. I used to have some footie pajamas that I really loved to wear (no hood on those), they weren’t fleece, but they were nice and warm.

My husband would probably think I was insane if he came home one night to find me wearing a pair. Especially after how much I made fun of them. Really he has nothing to worry about, at $100 a pair there is no way I would buy them. Still, on super cold nights when we are trying to stay in and stay warm, they suddenly become pretty appealing!

What do you think of them? Would you buy a pair?

Organized Simplicity

By , February 5, 2011

If you are looking for a way to easily simplify your home, and get better organized in the process, this book could become your new best friend! Organized Simplicity: The Clutter-Free Approach to Intentional Living might be a small book, but it certainly is full of great ideas. I also really loved the presentation of the book, with a great layout, and a spiral bound cover, it made it easy to reference during the activities in the book.

What I enjoyed most about the book is that the first half talks about why simplifying is important. It lays out the reasons to make your home more organized, while not being overly preachy about it. Some simple living books take things to the extreme, but I found that Tsh Oxenreider did a great job striking a balance between simple living, and modern living.

The second half of the book is a real gem too, and one that I will be revisiting often. It lays out a great 10 day plan to a more organized home. Each part of the home gets special attention for a day or two. I like that there were check lists before beginning, so I had my tools on hand before tackling the objectives.

Here’s a little bit more about the book, and the author:

Simplicity isn’t about what you give up.  It’s about what you gain. When you remove the things that don’t matter to you, you are free to focus on only the things that are meaningful to you. Imagine your home, your time, your finances, and your belongings all filling you with positive energy and helping you achieve your dreams. It can happen, and Organized Simplicity can show you how.

Inside you’ll find:

  • A simple, ten-day plan that shows you step-by-step how to organize every room in your home
  • Ideas for creating a family purpose statement to help you identify what to keep and what to remove from your life
  • Templates for a home management notebook to help you effectively and efficiently take care of daily, weekly and monthly tasks
  • Recipes for non-toxic household cleaners and natural toiletry items including toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo

Why Silly Matters!

By , February 3, 2011

With so many big issues in the world, important ones too, silly things are often put down. Silly things are often considered frivolous, unimportant, and a big old waste of time. Well, I am here to tell you that silly matters! A lot.

Moneky Baby

I adore things that some consider silly. Pink flamingos are a good example, but they make me smile each time I see them. Why? They are just so completely outrageous, especially in their pink plastic form that adorn our garden. There are many things that to others are just plain silly, but for yourself they hold some sort of happiness. But here are the reasons why I think silly things are not just fun, but are actually very good for us.

The silly things you love make you laugh, which has been shown to be very healthy! Laughter is an immune booster, and it’s also a great healer. Feeling blue? Sick with a nasty bug? Pop in your favorite silly movie and laugh, and you will feel better. And it’s not just that you will feel better in that moment, but you will actually help your body heal. This book, Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient, was considered groundbreaking, and share a great deal about laughter as medicine, and there are more and more studies being released to support this as real science! Ever heard of Laughter Yoga? Sounds pretty silly to be sure, but my goodness it sure is making people feel great! It’s something I would love to check out in person!

Silly things also make you feel happy. Think about it. The last time you got to do your favorite thing, didn’t you feel happy? Even if it’s something as small as watching a silly video, or telling a totally stupid joke, the happy factor is there. Happy people are healthier than their gloomy counterparts. In fact, it has been shown that even if you pretend to smile, it will actually make you happier. It’s simply a matter of muscle to brain communication, smiling tells your brain that you are happy, making you feel happier (the reverse also holds true, so watch your frowns). Go ahead and try it! Smile and see how you feel.

Happy people have been shown to be more kind and generous as well, and who wouldn’t want a world full of that?!

Also, have you ever noticed how much better your thinking is when you are feeling content? When do you usually have your best ideas? I can’t remember a single time a good idea has come to me in a down mood. People in good moods, thinking about how to solve problems both big and small can only be a good thing!

What things do you adore that others may consider silly? Why do you love them?

*P.S. If the photo of Baby in her monkey jogging suit didn’t make you giggle, even a little bit, you may need a serious silly transfusion.*
