Pumpkin Harvest 2011

To say this year was a bust is a bit of an understatement. The weather was just all wrong, and though we did get 3 pumpkins, they didn’t quiet measure up. Behold the pumpkin of 2010:

Weighing in at over 60 pounds, this was a massive pumpkin! We had a few smaller pumpkins as well, but we were both so proud of this one! My husband even sculpted it (and might I add, he did so without real tools, using only a spoon and a knife). Here is a video of the spooky pumpkin when it was finished:

And now, without further fanfare, here is our pumpkin harvest for 2011:

Three of the cutest little pumpkins you could ever see! These are not from mini-pumpkin seeds however, they are regular pumpkins that just didn’t get any bigger because we had such a crazy growing season this year. I put them next to our Corpse Bride village so you can see just how little they actually are.

Here’s hoping we grow some more big ones next year! Looks like we will be buying a few for carving/sculpting this Halloween. What about you? Do you carve pumpkins? Do you grow your own?

Inspire yourself!

Too often we look to outside sources for inspiration, when inspiration has been inside of us all along. ~Aimee Gertsch

Lately I have been thinking about inspiration in regards to becoming more of who we would like to be. I always love seeing images that spark something inside of me, or reading about people who are doing amazing things, or even just viewing gorgeous images of nature. And I firmly believe that these are important and helpful tools that can help us become the people we hope to be. But I was thinking too of how often we discredit the inspiration that comes from our own thoughts.

Have you noticed how quickly we quote famous people, but rarely put our own brilliant thoughts out there as quotes? We are not any less brilliant just because we aren’t well known. What about images of people who are fit or have some other quality we admire and want to emulate? Why not put ourselves up on our inspiration boards?

The image above is an image of myself. It was taken some time ago, but captures a feeling that I love and want to feel all the time. I decided to add the text to it too, because when that thought came to me I felt it was a good one. We have so much inside of ourselves that can not only inspire our own lives but you never know what it might mean to someone else. I know that my own life has been enriched by friends who put their inspired thoughts out there.

So here is a little challenge, let’s put ourselves out there a bit more! And most of all, let’s be inspired by who we already are!

Geeking Out for Halloween

Last year for Halloween my husband and I dressed up as Mario and Luigi. Originally I had planned on being Princess Peach, but the costume I ordered didn’t fit right at all, and time was up for making one. So, Mario and Luigi it was! This year I am trying to plan a little bit further ahead. We have had the following GEEK-tastic ideas for our costumes this year:

  • Chell and her companion cube.
  • Spooky action at a distance.
  • Schrodinger’s cats.
  • A Jedi and Princess Leia.
  • Characters from Harry Potter.
  • Mario and Princess Peach.

Right now we are leaning towards Chell and her companion cube. If you come over on Halloween night, I will make you a cake.*

Oh, and of course when I saw this costume, I wondered if I would be able to recreate it because let’s face it, it’s awesome.

Do you think I would win a major award if I dressed like a leg lamp? Do you dress up for Halloween? What are you going to be this year?

*This will really only make sense to those who play Portal. The shirt and companion cube (along with other Portal goodies) can be found here.*

Fall is for baking!

Something about fall makes me want to bake. Especially pumpkin, and even more so thanks to my Pinterest addiction. I haven’t been baking lately (I’ve been sick with a cold, and my hubby has been on a very restricted diet to help heal his ulcers). However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been filing away great ideas for fall baking. Here are some of my favorites:

S’mores cookies from Martha Stewart.

Funfetti Fudge. Confession: I love Funfetti cake mix, and my favorite thing to do with it is to make cake mix cookies. I really want to try this fudge.

Jalapeno cream cheese crescents. These sound really tasty.

Bacon and egg cups. This would make a perfect weekend breakfast. Oh how I love breakfast foods.

Does fall put you in the mood to bake too?
