This morning we woke up to a light blanket of snow, with snow falling. They say there will be more as the day goes on. It’s days like this when I am glad that we don’t have anywhere that we have to be. It’s also days like this when I wish that we had a hot tub! There is nothing quiet as nice as soaking in the hot tub while the snow falls around you.
The photo is from the first snow back in 2007. I didn’t brave the cold (in my pajamas) to get a photo for this snow, and it’s not actually our first snow anyway (we had some before Halloween), but it we keep getting a lot of snow maybe we will go out an build a snow flamingo.
Time to put away the flip flops and break out the coats.
I am not a big fan of winter (summer is much more my style), in fact, I am pretty sure that I need sunlight to maintain my sanity. We had a small skiff of snow this morning, and they say more is on the way tomorrow. I’m not ready for winter, but theses are the things that make it bearable.
- Wearing sweatshirts. Not something you can really do in the summer, but there is something so comfy about sweats and other warm clothing.
- Flannel pajamas. Super cute, and of course, totally good to have when the temperature drops below freezing.
- Hot chocolate. My guilty pleasure, complete with mini-marshmallows. It also reminds me of many times spent at the Galaxy Diner, sipping hot chocolate and chatting with my good friend Anna-Marie. Plus, hot chocolate is perfect for warming up on cold nights.
- Christmas. Unlike my hubby, I actually LOVE shopping for gifts. Of course we both love the music, the tasty treats, the fun decorations, and spending time with family.
- The crisp smell of snow. Also the way the sky looks at night when it is going to snow soon. Magic.
Sometimes you don’t have to venture very far to find an interesting subject to photograph. These were taken in our front yard… a study of snow if you like. Because the temperatures have been warm enough to melt the snow, and then cold enough to freeze it again, the snow has these wonderful crystals on it!

This was the first photo of the day, and I think it turned out really well. It was a spot where my husband had stepped, but it made such an interesting structure, especially with the way the light was playing with it.

This was the top of a snow pile in the road, which also looked really neat with the sun shining on it. I like this one a lot because the sky behind it is so blue.

I liked the way the sun was shining through just little spots in the snow. I also really wanted to capture the way the snow crystals looked. Photographing snow is actually pretty difficult because the brightness from the snow tricks the camera. I think they turned out well though. Not as lovely as in person, but pretty close!
And now for my absolute favorite of the day, the piece of ice that was in our bird bath. My husband thought it would be neat to photograph, but he had no idea when he first picked it up that it had such great form. The ice coming off the sides especially… it reminded me of an ice sun!
