Bento Box Fun

Awhile back I got an adorable book called Yum-Yum Bento Box: Fresh Recipes for Adorable Lunches. It has been sitting on my shelf for a few years, waiting for the day when I had some supplies to create cute food.

Thanks to some Amazon giftcards, the day finally arrived! I have a Panda bento box, and many fun shaped molds to make boiled eggs with. My first attempt was a Hello Kitty boiled egg, which turned out cute, except the egg was too small so it really didn’t mold. Further attempts at other shapes have worked out much better, and we are thinking of making some as a fun twist on the traditional Easter egg (we will still color eggs though).

One of my favorite YouTube shows, Cooking With Dog, has a very good video about making bento:

What about you? Have you tried making cute foods for bento boxes?

At least it was yummy.

For our 10 year anniversary my husband (who knows me very well I might add) gave me a Hello Kitty cake pan, complete with Hello Kitty food coloring. He also gave me a super cool watch and gorgeous flowers. Anyway, I thought he was very clever since the traditional gift for 10 years is tin, and the cake pan is kind of like tin.

I couldn’t wait to put it to use! Of course, I was feeling a bit lazy so I picked up my favorite cake mix (Funfetti) and got to cake baking. First of all, it fell apart coming out of the pan. Next time, the cake will be from scratch, since that is much more dense it should come out in one piece (hopefully). Secondly, I didn’t have any proper decorating tools, just a kitchen knife.

At least it was yummy.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Because we also celebrate our wedding anniversary this month, we tend to keep Valentine’s Day pretty low key in our house. We order heart shaped pizzas, and watch a movie at home, and forgo gift giving. It’s a fun tradition that we have had ever since we got hitched!

Of course, Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be complete without some sort of treat. This year I wanted to make something fun that I hadn’t tried before, Rice Krispies treats with Valentine’s Day M&Ms in them. They are very good, although I have to admit that I am a purest and do prefer my Rice Krispies treats plain! But they do look fun for the holiday, and that was really the whole point anyway.

What about you? Do you enjoy celebrating Valentine’s Day? Do you have any traditions?

Garden Dreaming

This winter has been mild. Just like the Farmer’s Almanac predicted, it has indeed been cold and dry. Not much snow to speak of, which is bad really, although I have really enjoyed the relatively warm and sunny winter we are enjoying. However, it has me longing for the spring so I can garden! Seeing all the work that needs to be done (since it’s not hidden by snow), and yet not being able to get out and do it (since the ground is frozen) is driving me batty!

I do have plans though! I really want to make our garden an awesome place to grow food. Just a few images of garden inspiration. Oh, and it doesn’t help that seed catalogs are already arriving either! Come on snow, give us a little hibernation for a bit so we can really be ready for spring!

And I have determined that this will be the year when we will grow blue potatoes!
